Whether you want to occasionally treat yourself or require a daily fix, making a latte at home is not a difficult endeavor. You don’t need any fancy tools or equipment (or even an espresso machine) to whip up a good, delicious version. Chances are that you already have everything you need in your kitchen. Once you’ve made a latte at home, you’ll be able to treat yourself whenever you want.
In the simplest terms, a latte is a combination of espresso, steamed milk, and foam. When you make one at home, you can make it truly yours by adjusting the above quantities and adding any flavorings.
Here, we’ll give you the basics of latte making to get you started. We’ll also show you a few different ways to create steamed and frothed milk.
1. Brew your coffee or espresso.
Using a Moka pot, portable espresso maker, or other brewing device, make strong coffee or espresso. If you’re making strong coffee, we recommend two to three ounces. If you’re making espresso, use one to two shots, depending on how much caffeine you’d like.
TIP: Espresso is bold, concentrated coffee made with pressurized hot water and very fine grounds. If you want to substitute regular coffee in a latte, you’ll want it to be as strong as possible.
2. Froth your milk.
If you have an automatic milk frother, use it as normal. If not, you can heat your milk using a microwave or stove. To froth your milk, shake it vigorously in a glass jar or whisk it in a bowl. Froth until your milk has doubled in size.
Pour your coffee or espresso into a glass. If you’d like, add caramel or peppermint syrup. Holding back the foam with a spoon, pour in your hot milk. Then spoon on the foam. If you’d like, you can top with whipped cream and espresso powder.
