In order to understand why we need to limit the cups of coffee, we should first find out how much caffeine a single cup contains. What it caffeine? It’s the main ingredient of coffee and it’s currently the most consumed psychoactive substance on the planet.
Depending on the size of the cup, how the coffee bean is roasted, and how it is served, the amount of caffeine in a cup can range from 50 to 400 mg. For instance, a small-sized cup of brewed coffee at home could have 40 mg only, while the 16 oz cup of Starbucks could have more than 300 mg. Typically, an average 8 oz. cup of coffee has about 100 mg of caffeine.
A lot of articles will tell you that adults are recommended to drink only four cups of coffee or consume 400 mg of caffeine. And that’s the safest.
On the contrary, that actually depends on the person. Some people have other sources of caffeine such as chocolate, tea, energy drinks, soft drinks, and even some medicines. Some people can also drink more than four cups of coffee with “no” problem.
The reason why I placed quotation marks on the word “no” is that people think they might have no issues drinking five or more cups of coffee a day, but the truth is they’re harming their body. When people consume caffeine more than the recommended intake, they can have anxiety, high blood pressure, heart palpitations, panic attacks, hyperacidity, dehydration, and tremors.
Even the U.S. Food and Drug Administration encourages people to limit their caffeine intake to 400 mg a day. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) also suggests the same thing. However, this recommendation isn’t for children, adolescents, and pregnant women. Further research needs to be done in order to provide a limit for these populations. Although a lot of references would recommend adolescents to consume only half of the recommended caffeine intake for adults.
According to the report of EFSA to the European Commission, 200 mg if caffeine is safe for adults who are generally healthy. Even when taken less than two hours before performing a vigorous exercise, it’s still safe.
What’s the equivalent of 200 mg? That’s about three Espresso shots, two 8 oz. cups of coffee, two cans of Red Bull, and four cups of 8 oz. tea. If you’re a Starbucks fan, any one of their Venti coffee approximately contains 400 mg of caffeine. The report doesn’t suggest that one drink is safer than the rest. However, it is recommended to take coffee or tea instead of soft drinks because of the high sugar content of the latter.
